Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent Get Writing Credit on Olivia Rodrigo's "deja vu"
Parts of the song are lifted from "Cruel Summer"
Published Jul 09, 2021Olivia Rodrigo's enormous success has been ever so slightly, ahem, soured by people pointing out that several parts of this year's SOUR sound like they were directly lifted from other songs. Now, one of those similarities has been made official, as Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent have been added as co-writers on Rodrigo's hit "deja vu."
Swift, Antonoff and St. Vincent's names are now in the metadata of "deja vu" on streaming services. Although none of the parties involved have spoken publicly about the credit, it's almost certainly due to the distinct similarity between "deja vu" and Taylor Swift's 2019 song "Cruel Summer." In fact, Rodrigo said in a Rolling Stone video that her track was directly inspired by "Cruel Summer."
Despite this, there doesn't seem to be any beef between Rodrigo and Swift. Back in May, by which point "deja vu" was already a single, the pair posed for a photo at the BRIT Awards (as seen above).
Now that the credits for "deja vu" have been amended, one can't help but wonder if Elvis Costello is getting any ideas about the similarity between "brutal" and "Pump It Up," or if Paramore are considering the connection between "good 4 u" and "Misery Business."
