Mother Tongues Get Weird in the Woods on "Let You Down" Video
"This was our first foray into the world of pyrotechnics — you all better be ready when shows start up again," says the band's Lukas Cheung
Published Dec 17, 2020Mother Tongues kicked off the rollout of their debut EP, Everything You Wanted, with lead single "Let You Down," and now they're capping off the year by treating the track to a surreal new video.
At first, everything in the clip looks pretty normal, with the psych quintet jamming out to the track in the Ontario countryside. Then, a small militia emerges, lead singer Lukas Cheung has some intimate moments with dandelions in a car, and a drum head catches on fire. The video's evolution mimics the way the song evolves from a sweet, Broadcast-esque track into a trippy psych jam.
Says Cheung, "We've been throwing Hollowfest, a DIY music fest, in Perth, ON, every September for the last four years. Unfortunately, we weren't able to do that this year — but as a consolation, we were able to shoot this video with our pals. It's loosely inspired by a Jean-Luc Godard film I saw earlier this year."
He adds, "It was a challenge using what was at our disposal and working around the limitations, a lot of things fell into place for us. The Hollowfest family came together and formed the cast, our friend Brit had just opened a vintage shop in town and provided all the wardrobe. The whole community we've built came together to make it happen, and I felt very lucky to have the opportunity to keep creating amongst all the strangeness of this year. Oh, and this was our first foray into the world of pyrotechnics — you all better be ready when shows start up again."
Says director Ryan Faist, a.k.a. Boy Wonder, "Lukas and I know each other from [Toronto record store] Paul's Boutique. I made a record in the basement and, one winter day, Lukas said, 'Hey! We should make a video.' It's now the first week of March. We're planning a video on the beach. That plan was quickly squashed on March 13. So, September comes around and Lukas is retreating up to the sacred Hollowfest grounds, and again said, 'Hey! We should make a video.' I put my portable BBQ and tent in the car and fled. I'm just glad that Mother Tongues wanted to safely make something together. The most expensive part of the video was the lens that I broke before we had even started. Good thing I have a Mother Tongues hoodie and it'll be worth big bucks some day."
