Listen to Antony and the Johnsons' Swanlights Now on Exclaim.ca
Published Oct 05, 2010Of all the artists who dot the musical landscape, there is nobody quite like Antony and the Johnsons. The band have long since earned a reputation for possessing a unique brand of tender vaudeville witticism, and the upcoming Swanlights is no departure from their modus operandi.
Swanlights will not be released until October 12 via Secretly Canadian, but you can listen to it here, where it will be streaming all week on Exclaim.ca.
While Antony Hegarty has not departed from his unabashed lyrical tenderness and emotional scope, listeners will discover that Swanlights takes the project astray from its previous austere musical habits to create a layered and complex sonic experiment. The album is richly adorned with unorthodox percussion, vivid string and brass arrangements, and heavily distorted guitar, making this perhaps Hegarty's more varied and diverse statement to date. On top of that, Swanlights also showcases a duet with Björk on the striking "Flétta," a track that's not to be missed.
In conjunction with the release of Swanlights, Antony and the Johnsons will be releasing a special edition of the album that will contain a 144-page art book made up of Antony's paintings, collages, photography and writing. Both the album and the book are an exploration of environmental issues, such as the human relationship with the natural world.
Antony and the Johnsons currently have no North American dates in support of the album, but for now, Swanlights itself is more than enough.
Swanlights will be streaming on Exclaim.ca until October 11.
