A$AP Ferg / A$AP Mob The Opera House, Toronto ON, December 11
Published Dec 13, 2013On the final stop of a multi-city tour, NYC rap crew A$AP Mob showed Toronto a lot of love. Seemingly sans cash cow A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Ant and A$AP Nast stepped out to the menacing strains of Ferg's "Let It Go." The Trap Lord, clad in a Maple Leafs jersey, got right into it, kicking murderous staccato flows with the Mob on backup vocals. It all seemed promising until he let the crew take over.
The beats drowned out A$AP Ant and Nast, who already had poor acoustics and a lack of recognizable songs going against them. If there are comparisons to be drawn between Wu-Tang Clan and A$AP Mob (New York rap crews with over five members), it soon became clear that this was a group composed mostly of U-Gods. Two-thirds of Long Beach rap crew Cutthroat Boyz, A$ton Matthews and Joey Fatts tagged along and showed more promise than the Mob second-stringers. The crowd waved their hands and shouted chants dutifully, but there was a sense of duty rather than enjoyment. All that changed when Ferg reclaimed the stage and delivered a moody, intense version of "Persian Wine." The titanic trap beat of "Work" brought the crowd to the brink of moshing as Ferg dove into the crowd.
Ferg followed up with "Dump Dump," leading the rowdy audience in call-and-response cheers of "I fucked your bitch." Then he demanded the lights be turned purple while he performed karaoke renditions of A$AP Rocky's hits, including his breakout "Kissin' Pink."
Suddenly, A$AP Rocky pops out of the wings and he and Ferg launched into "Shabba." The crowd lost it, rapping every absurd punchline back to the duo as a number of female attendees clambered up on their friends' shoulders to get a better look. Marriage proposals were offered. A$AP Ferg closed out with the mournful "Hood Pope," ending the show on a smooth note.
Rocky's cameo was just icing on the cake for a solid solo showing for A$AP Ferg, though he might want to leave his little homies behind next time.
