Published Jul 17, 2015Late last year, Birds of Bellwoods released the live recording Livewires, and the Toronto folk unit are already set to follow it up with their studio debut. The band will be releasing their first studio EP, the not-so-accurately titled The Fifth, on August 13.
The new offering hears the band expanding their folksy sound to include elements of progressive rock, alt-rock and pop music. Not to worry, though — a press release confirms that the group still manages to maintain their sincere, natural vibe on the new material, which blends with "the foot-stomping, barn burning level of energy and precision" that they pull off live.
The upcoming EP was recorded at A Stare Away Studios in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood with producer Johnny Simmen. It features contributions from violist Jesse Morrison and violinist Jeremy Foster.
Before The Fifth officially arrives, Exclaim! is pleased to premiere the EP's first single "Sky." A statement from the band explains that the track was inspired by the loss of a friend, and the plucky, orchestral instrumentation and heartfelt vocals provide a touching tribute.
Give it a listen below, and if you like what you hear, be sure to catch the band at their album release show at Lee's Palace in Toronto on August 13.
