Published Nov 02, 2020In 2016, Amber Heard divorced from Johnny Depp after allegations of physical abuse emerged. In the years after, numerous details and allegations arose from both sides of the marriage, and British newspaper The Sun alleged that Depp was a "wife beater" in its publication. Depp tried to sue The Sun for libel, and today it was announced that he lost.
According to the Associated Press, Depp's libel suit against News Group Newspapers has been concluded, and Depp came out on the losing end. Justice Andrew Nicol said the actor had "not succeeded in his action for libel," adding that the newspaper had proven that what it published was "substantially true."
The Sun said that the decision was a "stunning victory for press freedom," with a spokesperson adding, "Domestic abuse victims must never be silenced and we thank the judge for his careful consideration and thank Amber Heard for her courage in giving evidence to the court."
Heard's American attorney Elaine Charlson Bredehoft added that the verdict was "not a surprise" for anyone who followed the trial, saying, "Very soon, we will be presenting even more voluminous evidence in the U.S."
Depp's next legal battle will take place next year as he sues Heard for $50 million USD over a Washington Post story about domestic violence.
